‘If you tip a server zero, they owe the restaurant’: Server explains why tip sharing is hard for service workers
Everyone is familiar with the traditional chip model. Diners pay whatever they want, but socially they are expected to tip at least 15% for good service. However, contrary to popular belief, tips are not free money.
Not only is it taxed, but depending on the system a particular establishment uses, not everything goes to the person receiving the tip. In some cases, one or the other may work.
Well, you may have heard of tip sharing. This is a common restaurant and bar implementation based on the idea that tipping is given for the entire meal. This means the server can share some of the tips and give them to other members of her staff.
But with the server TikTok creator Abigail (@flabigailfartin) argues that tip sharing is not only flawed with no reward, but milks the most vulnerable servers themselves.
In a series of TikTok videos, Abigail shows why small or no tips matter so much, and other shady aspects of her workplace tip-sharing policy that most people don’t know. increase.

The author later posted another video with a more detailed explanation. For example, let’s say she made her $3,000 sale. So 3% tip share is her $90.

According to TikToker, servers typically expect a 20% tip, so if your bill is $40, that 20% is $8.

So for every $100 a customer spends, $3 is tip share. With a tip of 20%, or $20, the server really only gets $17. That’s because he gets 3% of the tip.

That’s why servers hate “stiffing”. This means the customer tipped him $0.

Regardless of whether or not you tip, @Flabigailfartin says they still owe the restaurant a 3% tip because they have to pay it out of their own pocket.
