Can you put black hair dye over blue hair dye? – HairstyleCamp
Have you dyed your hair blue for a while but feel like it’s time to go back to your tried and true black hair? If you’ve been thinking about dying your hair back to black for a while, here’s your sign to go ahead and go to the dark side!
We are here to tell you why black hair color is the perfect next step after blue hair color, how to dye your hair from blue to black at home and other important facts about dyeing your hair black after blue!
Why do we like black hair after we have blue hair?
First of all, black is one of the only hair colors that will fully cover your blue hair. Because it is so dark, it is able to make the blue disappear for good.
One thing to keep in mind when choosing your black hair color is that many (and we mean most) black hair colors come with a blue base. Blue-black is very popular but you are one step ahead because you already have this blue base ready to use. Choose a black hair color that has a neutral base or a warm base (usually a warm base will contain red).
We also like to use black hair color after blue because black hair color is going to use a low key (less ammonia) and be gentler on the hair, this is because you are only depositing color (no lift required). This will keep your hair healthy and after you have blue hair that usually requires a lot of frequent bleaching and coloring, your hair will thank you!
How to dye blue hair black at home
Level 1: Choose the right shade of black. Remember to make sure you get a neutral or warm base black and not a blue black! You already have the blue base.
level2: Section your hair into four quarters, using clips to keep the sections in place. Black hair color is very messy, be sure to section your hair before you start to keep things nice and tidy! Use a barrier cream like Aquaphor around your hairline so your skin doesn’t stain!
Step 3: Mix your hair color. Mix your chosen shade of black with the key. This is usually a 1:1 ratio but we like to use scale to get the perfect proportions.
Step 4: Using a colored brush, apply the color starting at one of the back quarters. After you finish applying the color in one quadrant, use a gloved hand to work the color into the hair, making sure the hair is saturated and the blue is fully covered.
Step #5: Process the hair for the manufacturer’s recommended processing time. Usually about 30 minutes! Don’t wash too early! The blue needs time to cover completely.
Step #6: Wash off the black hair color. Be careful, black hair color is very messy so take your time to wash! Shampoo and condition.
Step #7: Dry and style as usual. Once dry you will see that the blue is gone and you are now a raven haired babe!
