13 photos of humpback whales playing together in the ocean
Our team swims with whales all over the world. But the Kingdom of Tonga is something special. This is the only place where you can come face-to-face with a 15-meter humpback whale. They circle you, look at you, wag their fins, pat their tails, and poke their noses. And they sing! You can hear whales chirping from the beach.
why Tonga? Humpback whales, like other animals, seek the safest places to breed their offspring en route to Antarctica. As it happens, their pit stop of choice is the Kingdom of Tonga. In the calm, shallow waters near the islands, whales hide their newborn babies from killer whales and other predators. A juvenile whale, about 4.5 meters long from birth, spends her first two months here.
Whales, despite their size, are excellent swimmers and not at all aggressive. They can swim two feet away from you or wave their giant fins right in front of you, but are well aware that they can harm small creatures like humans. So act as carefully as possible. Incredible experience!
