There are few things worse than being stuck with an unbearable neighbor. This is made worse if you are forced to deal with them, such as wanting to build something near your property line or something that will affect your neighbors. If you are, they do their best to make your life miserable, slowing down the process and being as specific as possible about everything.
Reddit user u/Sospuff details a story of petty revenge against a neighbor he calls a “thug.” A neighbor said he took OP to court on the grounds that the fence was 1.5 inches (4 cm) above the line and reported him when the fence was not up to regulation. An eye for an eye, a fence for a fence.

The neighborhood dispute began when the original poster (OP) contractor made a mistake in installing a fence and crossed the property line onto a neighbor’s property. The neighbor was irritated by this even though the fence only encroached on his neighbor’s property by 1.5 inches (4 cm).
He took OP to court for trespassing on his land and won because he was legally entitled, even though he was a petty person. The OP states that although he lost a lawsuit he didn’t contest, the neighbor would constantly yell about the law and his rights throughout the process. The OP suggested buying a property line where his fence encroached on his neighbor’s territory. The property line was behind a dense hedge, but the neighbor adamantly agreed did not do it.
Some time later, OP finds out that his neighbor’s dog is considered a “dangerous breed”. That means he has strict regulations on his fence. The fence should be at least he 6.5 feet (2 meters) high, have a concrete base, and enclose the entire property.
After measuring the fence, OP indicates that the current fence is only 4.6 feet (1 m 40 cm) high, almost 2 feet (60 cm) long, and has no foundation. The poster then asks a rhetorical question.
Since some commenters disagreed with OP and the fence controversy was originally his fault, OP provided more information about the neighbor and his dog. He says it’s not just for revenge, but because he has young children, and neighbors encourage their dogs by calling him a “good boy” whenever they bark at the OP’s children playing outside.

This story shows how difficult it can be to deal with neighbors at times. Having good neighbors is a great blessing. If you build a relationship with them, you can ask them to look after your house when you go out, let your kids hang out with you, or help you out.
If you don’t get along, you lose all perks. If your neighbors are particularly furious, they may actively oppose you and make things difficult for you. In many cases, you may just have to move out and deal with your neighbors or just put up with it.
LegalZoom has some great tips To deal with troublesome neighbors before resorting to court or violence. If your neighbor is playing loud music, making noise early in the morning or late at night, or otherwise disturbing you, don’t call the police right away or file a complaint.
What will likely work best is talking to them directly. Some people don’t even realize that they are causing trouble for others. If you can meet directly and talk about your troubles, the problem may be solved immediately. If you can’t meet in person, we encourage you to text her or write a letter with your concerns.
If you can’t do that, it’s time to start the formal process. Find out if your concern has a legal basis. Next, get a copy of your local ordinance or check with your HOA to see if what your neighbor is doing is actually acceptable in your community. Once you have collected enough information, hand the ordinance to your neighbor and let them know you want to settle this matter without going to the authorities.
If it still doesn’t work, why don’t you call the police? Perhaps you can listen to both sides of the dispute and consider mediation, which is cheaper than going to court.
Finally, if the issue persists, you can file a claim in small claims court. I hope the issue is resolved.
