What’s more chic than a classic Chanel tweed blazer? Incorporate the same style into your hair with tweed blonde.
Now that fall has settled nicely in and our favorite nostalgic TV shows are back in Netflix’s global top 10 (Gilmore Girls, anyone?), it’s no wonder we’re copying old money, preppy-girl vibes, when it comes to our hair. Who didn’t watch Gossip Girl and immediately envy Serena van der Woodsen’s gorgeous mane of dirty blonde hair? Serena’s is one of my iconic hair goals and she is a shining example of this fall’s latest hair color trend, tweed blonde.
Invented by Jordanna Cobella, one of the top Wella UK artists and colourists, tweed blonde involves interlocking strands of ashy, cool blonde blonde and warm blonde laced throughout. Similar to a Chanel tweed bag, the different shades of hair, woven together, add dimension and layers to an otherwise boring, dirty blonde look.
Unlike a balayage or ombré hairstyle, tweed blonde does not lighten as the color moves down the hair shaft, but rather starts light at the top. So far, the tweed blonde has over 19.8 million views on TikTok. It’s safe to say the world is taking action.

#1 Tweed Blonde
Although blonde is often thought of as a summer or spring color due to its brightness, celebrity colorist and L’Oréal Professionnel ambassador Tauni Dawson believes tweed blonde can be even more flattering for winter. “For natural blondes, I feel like keeping the lighter tones for winter is a way to still feel like yourself,” says Dawson. “Sometimes when we tone down blonde, there’s a lack of shine and that can create a dullness that’s not as flattering as the lighter blonde tones.”
Min Kim, expert colorist and L’Oréal Professionnel global ambassador, says it’s all about making sure the stylist behind the salon chair lifts your blonde hair properly. When applying bleach, Kim suggests stylists leave your hair with a bit of heat (a level 8 to get technical) and apply a shine or toner formula to enhance the multidimensional look in a shade of blonde that suits you best: “There are many ways to approach this based on skin tone, previous color history, lifestyle and budget,” she says.
Like any other shade of blonde, tweed blonde requires maintenance. It’s not just about perfecting the color, Kim says, but about rigorous maintenance to ensure your hair is Gossip Girl-approved. Since there are a ton of different shades and hues in tweed blonde, Kim recommends visiting your salon every six to eight weeks to refresh your tweed blonde with a shine, and suggests going in every three to four months to refresh and redefine your blonde.
#2 Tweed blonde hair
Dawson recommends keeping hair as clean and detoxified as possible—especially if you live in a big city with pollutants that can affect how long your color lasts. Try incorporating nourishing shampoos and hair masks into your shower routine. “I love using the L’Oréal Professional Metal Detox Treatment,” she says. “It helps neutralize metals (often in our water from our pipes) that can discolor and oxidize and lead to breakage.” By keeping your hair as light as possible without heavy build-up, tweed blonde won’t look dull over time and will reduce the amount you generally have to pay each month for maintenance.
If you’re itching to try tweed blonde, it’s best to show your stylist a photo reference while you’re in the chair. For customers with a lighter base color, tweed blonde is obviously easier to achieve, but don’t let that put you off. You can get a similar look by asking for ashy and warm-toned babylights (smaller, thinner highlighters spread across your head). Dawson suggests keeping things in the same tonal family and asking for highlights and tones like caramel, honey, and chestnut if you don’t want to go so light. If you want to achieve tweed blonde without bleaching your hair – try brunette with brunette, a similar, richer color for people with chocolate hair.
