Andy Sachs famously steps away from the fashion world at the end of The Devil Wears Prada, but Anne Hathaway has embraced her role as a style star. She was happy to revive the character for one night, even if it was by accident.

Speaking to Savannah Guthrie on Today on October 12, the Oscar winner admitted she had accidentally dressed up as Sachs during New York Fashion Week last month when she wore a brown crocodile coat, turtleneck top and skirt paired with thick bangs, and a high ponytail for the Michael Kors show. What’s more, she sat next to Anna Wintour, the alleged inspiration for the titular devil and played to perfection by Meryl Streep in the film. It really seemed like a deleted scene had come to life.

“That was nuts, wasn’t it?” Hathaway said. “It was by accident. I had to wear something else – the shoes didn’t fit – it was the second outfit that came and then my hairdresser, who was so lovely and I’d never worked with him before, just said, ‘Oh , I know what to do!’ And he threw my hair up in a ponytail. I looked in the mirror and thought, Oh, that’s funny, I wonder if someone will notice. They did!”

And here’s what Andy Sachs wore post-makeover, but also post-Runway, when she interviewed for a more serious journalism job, but had learned to respect fashion and also the art of presenting herself:

So imagine, if you will, that she reinvents herself as a high-society writer who insinuates herself into Miranda’s world and eventually becomes her friend when Miranda decides to treat her as an equal and not an underling. It might look like something…

Meanwhile, Emily (Blunt) finally gets to go to Paris and wear couture. Good endings all around.
